The Momentum Metropolitan Foundation, formerly known as the MMI Foundation, is deeply saddened and shocked at the sudden and untimely passing of HIV scientist and researcher Professor Gita Ramjee in Umhlanga, Kwa-Zulu Natal on 31 March 2020.
Professor Ramjee was a pioneer in the fight against HIV/AIDS with a passionate focus on women as the most vulnerable.
She was globally acknowledged and respected for her achievements in medical science and research field.
Whilst serving on the Board of the Foundation from 2010 to 2017, we had the benefit of her scientific insights and commitment, as we worked to bring about positive change in the lives of vulnerable individuals and communities.
Prof Ramjee’s tenure on the Board ended when our strategic focus shifted, but her contributions over seven years laid a solid foundation for our Foundation to continue to deliver on our social mandate.
South Africa has lost a fighter for a better life for all.
We recognise that no words or deeds offered can ease the pain of the losing this giant of the global medical science community. The best we can do is to honour the legacy she leaves of service to others, by continuing to fight against ongoing health challenges especially among the vulnerable. We salute her and express our deepest sympathy to her family. May she rest in eternal peace.
